This is a whacked out song about the bowling ball from lord of the rings (or one very similar) and it's hypnotic possession which turned Santa against his childhood best friend of American naval engineer Robert Edwin Peary (the man who "first" "discovered" the north pole) and forces him to pay it's ancient debt

past the far reaching border of the northern exposure
dwells a man of inscrutable fate
watching your deeds dear, the seventh palantir
that he pulled from the hands of his very best friend
he tried to resist and he failed
and his fortress, his impenetrable fortress,
indistinguishable from the fictional man of steel's
fueled by mechanisms not understood
by the operators of the modern age

built by the dreamers of a long forgotten time a civilization long since lost
to the shifting landscape the infinite tundra only navicable by cancerous beasts
and cosmic rays

nicholas, immortal nicholas, draws power from the oculus discovered in a pile of dust
found by himself and a young Robert Peary
adventuring boys exploring north
knew not the danger of venturing forth,
it cost young Robert his memory
and nicholas, cursed nicholas may never go home again

save but for once a year, so says the ancient pact
when the oculus makes it's command
ignoring modern ideas of what's possible the palantir guides his hands
and at night he still tells he can hear through the bells
him say "flee if you can my dear friend"
but despite not belonging, the curse is upon him
and he knows not the warmth to defend
